Beverley Pupils Back World Cup Bid

Children at Beverley St Nicholas Primary School hope Hull and East Yorkshire is picked to host group matches during the World Cup in 2018.

They came to school in their football shirts to throw their weight behind the bid to bring top flight international football to the KC stadium.

Although they range from just five to 11-years-old now, by 2018, they will be aged between 14 and 20.  World Cup matches hosted in Hull would be a fantastic chance for them to see international football as teenagers or young adults.

Ben, aged nine, of Beverley St Nicholas Primary School, said: “Hull is a big place and there would be a great atmosphere if the World Cup came here.”

Richard Winks, deputy headteacher at Beverley St Nicholas Primary School, said:  “I think it would be fantastic for Hull and the surrounding area and allow everyone to experience the excitement of world class sport.”

On Thursday, 26 November, the Hull bid to host World Cup Games will be taken to Wembley and presented to the FA.

By the end of the year the English cities chosen to host group stage events will have been chosen.

The FA will then continue campaigning to have England chosen as the host of the 2018 World Cup.

Residents are urged to register their support for the bid by choosing ‘Hull’ as the host city on this web site.

Support for the bid can also be given by texting ‘Hull’ to 62018. Messages will be charged at standard network rate.

Hull’s 2018 bid has been launched as a partnership between different organisations involved including University of Hull, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Football Club and Visit Hull and East Yorkshire.  A full list of partners can be found here

The last World Cup in Germany saw 3.36m fans attend the actual games along with 18.4m fans watching the games in “fan parks”.

More than 24 billion viewers in more than 240 countries watched at least one match and the German government estimated that the World Cup contributed an additional £250m to its national economy – roughly £20m and 100,000 visitors per host city. Overall, they estimated that the competition created 50,000 new jobs and contributed two billion euros (£1.8bn) to retail sales.

Armed Forces day Beverley

Beverley Armed Forces Day chairman David Elvidge has proposed a regular date every year for the event.

This year was the third time Beverley’s Armed Forces Day was run, and proved to be a major success despite MOD cuts affecting the amount of servicemen and women who could attend.

The performance of the various bands, including the Beverley Pipe Band, along with choirs from St Nicholas Primary School and the Beverley Male Voice Choir, made Sunday’s event special.

Now David is seeking views from the people of Beverley over the future of the event.

He said: “In order to enable us to place our event in everyone’s diary and on event calendars we would like to propose we hold Beverley Armed Forces Day on the first Sunday in July every year.

“We would be most grateful for any feedback regarding our previous events, ideas for entertainment, offers of volunteer support and possible sponsorship?”

Keiran Moves A Step Closer To Being A Gooner

Arsenal

A Beverley youngster has been given a dream opportunity to make his mark with Premier League giants Arsenal.

St Nicholas Primary School pupil Keiran Franciosy, nine and a dedicated Gooner, has been asked to join the Arsenal Soccer School Advance Centre after successfully completing a trial at Longcroft School on Friday.

It comes on the back of an excellent performance from the Beverley lad and his Westella and Willerby team at a tournament organised by Hull City Youth Development for the best under-10s teams in the area.

Although Kieran’s side  missed out on the semi-finals, his performance – scoring four out his side’s six goals, including a four-minute hat-trick.

But his dad, Simon Evans, opted to take his son down a different route – one which has ended with Keiran getting the chance to impress with his favourite side.

Simon told HU17.net: “As a result of seeing Keiran play so well, I decided to see if he had the ability to be coached at the highest level, so I looked at the setup of Arsenal Soccer Schools and was told he had to be invited only and would need to trial to be able to join the school.

“He attended on Friday evening and was over the moon to be asked back, and will now continue his development as a player training with the Advanced School on Monday and Friday evenings at Longcroft School, Beverley, while maintaining his training and matches for Westella on the weekend.”

Arsenal Soccer Schools have been operating since 1985 around the UK and have expanded internationally.

The courses are based on the same principles used at the training ground by Arsene Wenger and his coaching staff, allowing Kieran to combine his passion for Arsenal off the pitch with a chance to learn the Arsenal way.

Simon continued: “I can’t put into words how proud I am right now. Keiran has worked so hard, and loves the game with a passion.

“If he isn’t playing football, he’s on the PlayStation playing, or he’s watching Arsenal, or he’s outside playing with friends.

“He literally lives for football and Arsenal and at least now he will have the chance to fulfil his dream and potential.”

Keiran Franciosy Turns On The Style For Westella

Keiran Franciosy

Beverley’s Keiran Franciosy blossomed at a football tournament hosted by Hedon Road Football Club. Keiran of St Nicholas Primary School, Beverley players for the U10’s Westella & Willerby football team.

There were eight teams per group, two groups, top 2 only to through to SF. Keiran’s Westella team won their group, got to final, and lost on penalties to Sutton FC. Keiran hit six goals and had three assists. He also scored the equalizer in final to take it to a penalty shootout.

The first match was against Burton Pidsea, on Westella were facing a huge head wind. Keiran scored two goals, and set up a third before Westella went on to take the match 4-0 and started their campaign in style. Keiran scored another 2 goals in the second match against Withernsea in which Westella won 3-0. A great start to a tournament from the team and 4 in 2 games for Keiran.

The third game was a real challenge with both sides failing to create any clear chances on goal. Keiran came on in the match having been rested by the manager and set up what would be the winning goal and Willerby’s third straight win as they won 1-0 against Driffield Dragons.

The fourth game was against a good Hessle Sporting side, and for the first time in the tournament Willerby was behind with minutes to go. What followed next was jaw dropping, Marco Van Basten scored from an acute angle many years ago this was a hundred times harder and better, Keiran took a corner, it was cleared but deflected straight back to him coming very high in the air, he was just coming back from taking the corner and about eight feet from the corner flag he volleyed in, beating the skill of Van Basten, they all said it on the touchline, quoting “you won’t see a better goal than that all day.” The goal earned Willerby a point, and they remained on course for the Semi Finals.

The fith game was a tough one as they faced a Group 1 side which was very good with the ball, and at times showed Westella they have a lot to learn next season when they play in Group 1 for the first time. Mill Lane Wizards scored the only goal of the game with a wicked deflected shot; Mill Lane United later went on to qualify for the Semi Final behind Westella, but it meant a first loss for Westella.

Westella re-grouped winning the 6th and 7th games 2-0 and 2-1 to book their place in the Semi Final as group winners. After 7 matches and a long day, it was now down to who wanted it the most, who had the legs to go another round. Westella faced the other Mill Lane United side that had two teams in the Semis; Westella rode their luck, and Keiran bagged the goal that took them to the final.

The final was against FC Sutton, who like Westella had 2 back to back promotions, and are regarded as a Group 1 top four side. They were unbeaten in this tournament scoring with such ease; they topped all the scoring charts; it seemed on paper; they would walk the final too. The final was close with FC Sutton grabbed the early lead and with the writing on the wall, it looked grim. Westella though had a rare attack and was given a free kick just outside the box. FC Sutton expected a power shot to come in from young Edward; this didn’t happen; Edward laid it across goal to an unmarked Keiran, who smashed the net open to level the match 1-1.

The game then went into extra time and penalties. It could not have been closer and with nerves on end, I struggled to keep calm. Penalty after penalty went in; it was 3-3, Keiran already scoring his.

Westella’s fourth kick was just saved on the line, and FC Sutton scored to take the title, leaving Westella to reflect on a good days work and what might have been. However, they can take heart that they won a tournament last weekend and got to another final this weekend along with 3 successive promotions from group 4 all the way to group 1 next season. All in all, it was a great day for the lads and a lot can be taken from it into the next tournament.

On a personal note, I have never been more proud as a dad than today. Win or lose Kieran deserved his day, and long may this success continue.
